Federal: 29 CFR 1910.1450 and Appendices A and B
A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:
- Oregon has adopted additional rules that apply during laboratory research and quality control activities involving the use of a carcinogen.
The following is a summary of the additional rules for carcinogens in laboratories:
- All pipetting procedures must use mechanical pipetting aids.
- Laboratory-type hoods or glove boxes are to be used to confine experiments, procedures, and equipment which could produce aerosols.
- Surfaces on which carcinogens are handled must be protected from contamination.
- Contaminated wastes and animal carcasses must be handled and incinerated in a manner that does not cause the release of carcinogenic products. And, all other forms of a carcinogen are to be inactivated prior to disposal.
- Laboratory vacuum systems are to be protected with disposable absolute filters (capable of retaining 99.97 percent of a monodisperse aerosol of 0.3 micrometer particles), and exhaust systems containing these filters are to have suitable access openings to allow for filter efficiency evaluation.
- Employees conducting animal support activities are to wear provided protective clothing, remove protective clothing upon exit from a regulated area, collect used protective clothing in impervious containers at the point of exit (for decontamination or disposal) at the end of the day, wash upon exit from the regulated area, and shower after the last exit of the day.
- Employees other than those engaged only in animal support activities are to wear provided laboratory clothing, remove protective clothing upon exit from a regulated area, collect used protective clothing in impervious containers at the point of exit (for decontamination or disposal) at the end of the day, and wash upon exit from the regulated area.
- Laboratories and animal rooms where a carcinogen is handled and bioassay studies are performed are to have negative air pressure in relation to the pressure in surrounding areas, and exhaust air is to be decontaminated.
- Regulated areas are not to have ventilation system connections to any other areas.
- An inventory of carcinogens is to be maintained.
- Ventilation apparatus (laboratory-type hoods) are to be tested at least semiannually or immediately after conducting maintenance operations or making modifications.
