OSHA says that the open side of a loading dock is an unprotected side or edge. If it is four feet or more above the adjacent floor or ground, it must be guarded using one of the following three fall protection systems per 1910.28(b)(1):
- Guardrail system
- Safety net system
- Personal fall protection system
Please note that a single chain stretched across a loading dock (as used in the old days) is not considered adequate fall protection.
