Vermont has adopted Part 396 of the Federal Regulations.
Applicability
Part 396 applies to vehicles operating intrastate with a gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds, or transporting hazardous materials requiring placarding.
Mandatory inspection program
The Department of Motor Vehicles administers the mandatory periodic vehicle inspection program which is conducted at officially designated inspection stations throughout the state. All vehicles registered in Vermont shall be inspected once each year. Other vehicles at time of first registration and subsequently as shown on the current inspection certification affixed to the vehicle.
This mandatory inspection program is considered equivalent to the Federal annual inspection requirement in Part 396.
