California OSHA has a standard for illumination in general industry that is more specific than federal OSHA. It requires the following:
- Working areas, stairways, aisles, passageways, work benches, and machines must be provided with natural or artificial illumination that is adequate to provide a reasonable safe place of employment.
- When adequate natural illumination or permanent artificial illumination cannot be made available, suitable portable lights shall be provided.
- Skylights, side windows, lamps, and other light accessories that provide necessary illumination must be kept clean, adjusted, and repaired so that they do not impair the illumination required for employee safety.
Table IL-1, Minimum levels of illumination for safety, lists the following minimum requirements for various work areas:
Hazards requiring visual detection | Slight | High | ||
Normal activity level | Low | High | Low | High |
Areas | Storage yards, offices, locker rooms | Loading areas, warehouses, corridors, washrooms, spray booths, inspection | Elevators, stairways, assembly areas, layout areas | Engine rooms, processing areas, machine shops, sheet metal works, woodworking shops |
Footcandles | 0.5 | 1.0 | 2.0 | 5.0 |
