If an employee requests a workplace change (such as bringing in a service dog) because of a medical condition, the employer should engage in an interactive process. This means having a conversation with the employee to identify an effective reasonable accommodation. This process/conversation should be documented.
The employer is not required to provide the particular accommodation that an employee requests, but the employer is to provide one that is effective and would not pose an undue hardship.
If allowing the employee to bring in a service dog is effective and does not pose an undue hardship, the employer should allow the employee to do so.
As part of the interactive process, if the employee’s condition is not obvious, the employer may request reasonable documentation of the employee’s limitation and the need for an accommodation. The employer should not, however, ask for documentation on the service dog.
