Oregon’s idling limits apply to a commercial vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds.
Exceptions: A commercial vehicle may idle for a maximum of 30 minutes while waiting to load or unload or when actually loading or unloading during a single loading or unloading event.
A commercial vehicle with a GVWR > 26,000 lbs., that is equipped with a sleeper berth, and is parked in a place where it is legally permitted to park, may idle for the purposes of air conditioning or heating during a rest or sleep period when the outside temperature is < 50°F or > 75°F at any time during the rest or sleep period.
A commercial vehicle with a GVWR of more than 26,000 lbs., may idle for the purposes of air conditioning or heating while waiting to load or unload the vehicle or when actually loading or unloading the vehicle when the outside temperature is < 50°F or > 75°F.
There are also exceptions for:
- Traffic conditions;
- Operation of defrosters, heaters, or air conditioners;
- Installing equipment necessary to comply with manufacturers’ requirements, specifications, warranties;
- Compliance with federal, state, or local safety regulations;
- Emergency vehicles;
- Vehicle maintenance or repair;
- Vehicle inspection;
- Powering work-related mechanical, safety, electrical, or construction equipment; and
- Armored vehicles when a person must remain inside to guard the contents or while the vehicle is being loaded or unloaded.
