Written plans should always reflect changes in an employer’s workplace; therefore, plans should be updated as necessary. The regulations will often state that plans that have to be updated as necessary, including HAZWOPER, respiratory protection, confined spaces, HazCom, and some substance-specific regulations.
Many of the substance-specific regulations give an actual frequency and require annual updates, however. Some regulations require both annual and as necessary updates, including for those for Process Safety Management (PSM), bloodborne pathogens, laboratory standards, and some substance-specific substances again. Of note, the process hazard analysis for PSM has a required 5-year update cycle.
