Activity pays off for employers in several ways:
- Employees who are physically active have lower health care costs than inactive employees.
- Physically active employees take fewer sick days, missing an average of 4.1 fewer days of work each year.
- A workplace culture that encourages wellness has the potential to help employee productivity go up and absenteeism go down.
- Worksite wellness programs are an attractive perk and can help with recruiting and retention efforts.
- An active workforce is a happier workforce. Activity improves a person’s mood, and a worksite wellness program can boost employee morale.
Five ways to support an active workplace:
- Promote wellness challenges such as walking programs that encourage employees to take a minimum number of steps each day or walk a certain number of miles in a month;
- Encourage regular breaks for moving, make stairways more attractive, and improve sidewalks;
- Have company leaders support and participate in wellness initiatives;
- Create a walking path on the corporate campus and share information about safe walking paths in the community; and
- Support community initiatives that encourage activity, such as the creation of bike paths and hiking trails.
