Selecting the right type of portable ladder for a job, is just as important as selecting other equipment. Portable ladders vary in design and sizes, so consider the following:
Height. At what height are employees expected to reach to perform job tasks? The length of the ladder may not be the total working length of the ladder (e.g., the cap and top step of a stepladder cannot be used as a step). If the height of the work is beyond the maximum portable ladder length, consider providing workers with an alternative piece of equipment (e.g., scissor lift) to protect employees from falls.
Weight. What is the maximum intended load permitted for the ladder? The maximum intended load includes the total load (weight and force) of the worker plus all tools, equipment, and materials the ladder will need to support. Check the labels on portable ladders for duty ratings which indicate maximum weight capacities.
Ladders have been designed in five duty classifications:
- Type IAA Special Duty rated at 375 lbs.
- Type IA Extra Heavy-Duty rated at 300 lbs.
- Type I Heavy-Duty rated at 250 lbs .
- Type II Medium-duty rated at 225 lbs.
- Type III Light-duty rated at 200 lbs.
Job activity. What types of job tasks, how often, and where must they be performed? For example, what item(s) is the employee going to be carrying up and down the ladder (e.g., boxes, tools, wood, etc.)? This contributes not only to the workload and impacts the weight capacity of the ladder, but also affects a climber’s balance. Although it is a common practice for employees to perform work while standing on a ladder, it puts them at risk for fall-related injuries and should be discouraged.
