Highway use tax
Highway use tax (HUT) trip certificates of registration are available if a carrier does not want to obtain a HUT certificate of registration. The trip certificate allows a carrier to operate in New York State for 72 hours from the time of the certificate issuance and relieves the carrier from filing and paying taxes. There is a limit of 10 trip certificates of registration during a calendar year, and copies of the trip certificate must be kept for four years. HUT trip certificates are not available for trucks, trailers, dollies, or other attached devices transporting automotive fuel.
IFTA
Non-IFTA carriers operating qualified vehicles into New York must obtain an IFTA fuel trip permit. Fuel trip permits are also valid for 72 hours and New York will only issue a maximum of 10 permits per year.
Fees
72-hour HUT trip permit, $25 per tractor or truck
72-hour IFTA fuel trip permit, $25
