Carriers may obtain single trip 72-hour temporary (fuel) permits in lieu of permanent fuel license and tax reporting requirements. Temporary permits are obtained through the Office of Motor Carrier Services. A temporary permit and a 72-hour registration trip permit may be combined into one trip permit. Check with the Iowa DOT for details.
Vehicles based in Alaska, Washington D.C., Yukon, and Northwest Territories must obtain a temporary permit before entering Iowa, or enter Iowa with 30 gallons or less of motor fuel in supply tanks, purchase fuel in Iowa to cover miles traveled in Iowa, and retain the fuel receipts. Vehicles meeting any one of the following definitions must obtain a permit, if they do not have a permanent IFTA license: gross weight or registered weight of power unit exceeds 26,000 pounds; or power unit has three or more axles; or combination gross weight exceeds 26,000 pounds.
Fees
$20 per temporary permit (or $30 for combination fuel and trip permit), valid for 72 hours or upon leaving the state, whichever comes first.
