Carriers operating IFTA-qualified vehicles (vehicles/combinations over 26,000 pounds or vehicles with three or more axles regardless of weight) without an IFTA license and decals must obtain a four-day fuel trip permit to operate into California.
Failure to have a California fuel trip permit or proper IFTA credentials will subject the carrier to a minimum penalty of $100. If fuel tax is owed California the penalty may be $500 or 25 percent of the tax due, whichever is more. In addition, the vehicle may be seized and held until all tax, penalty, interest, and costs associated with the seizure and storage are paid.
