In Montana, private employers must reimburse employees for any costs that an employee expends or loses as a direct result of the employee carrying out their work duties and/or following the direction of the employer. Employers must also reimburse any losses incurred by an employee that are caused by the employer’s “want of ordinary care” (i.e., negligence).
Reimbursable expenses can include remote work expenses such as internet and cell phone bills.
State employees may by law be reimbursed for reasonable expenses such as meals, lodging, and transportation that occur while the employee is engaged in official state business. Travel policy is set by the state Dept. of Administration.
