Although Massachusetts law doesn’t require employee expense reimbursement for private employers, official guidance from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office recommends that employers reimburse employees for necessary and unavoidable expenses.
The Department of Labor Standards’ minimum wage rule requires that employees be reimbursed for travel time and expenses when an employee is asked to report to a location other than the regular worksite, or to travel from one place to another after the beginning or before the end of a workday.
State employees are usually entitled to reimbursement for travel and other work-related expenses. The exact requirements may vary depending on which agency or entity is the employer. Generally, approval and documentation are required for the expense to be reimbursed.
