Federal regulations
Massachusetts has adopted Part 392 of the Federal Regulations.
Applicability
Part 392 applies to vehicles having a gross vehicle weight rating, gross vehicle weight, gross combination weight rating, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more that are used for the transportation of property, and vehicles transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
Engine idling
A motor vehicle engine may not idle for more than five minutes.
Exceptions — There are exceptions for:
- vehicles being serviced;
- delivery of goods, wares, or merchandise when engine assisted power is necessary and alternate means are not available; and
- associate power when alternate power is not available.
Speed limit
65 mph on designated highways, 55 mph or less on other highways.
