Federal regulations
Indiana has adopted Part 392 of the Federal Regulations.
Applicability
Part 392 applies to for-hire carriers operating motor vehicles exclusively in intrastate commerce that have a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more.
Part 392 applies to private carriers operating motor vehicles exclusively in intrastate commerce that have a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
Part 392 applies to any size vehicle (for-hire or private) transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
Speed limit
The speed limit is 70 mph on interstates and certain state highways (as posted) if the vehicle has a declared gross weight of 26,000 pounds or less, 65 mph on interstates and certain state highways (as posted) if the vehicle has a declared gross weight of more than 26,000 pounds, and 60 mph on selected, divided highways (as posted).
