Private employers in Maine are allowed by law to mandate direct deposit of wages. State law requires that employees must be able to designate an appropriate financial institution of their choice, and no fees may be charged by the employer for payment via direct deposit. If payment by direct deposit or other electronic means would require additional cost to the employee, the employee must be able to choose another means of payment that involves no additional cost.
In the public sector, Maine law requires that all state employees be paid via direct deposit into an account specified by the employee. Limited waiver provisions are available under the law.
