The Washington Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) has adopted its own standard for storage racks and stacking that is more specific than the federal OSHA standard.
Washington Administrative Code (WAC 296-800-22035) employers to:
- Store materials so they do not create a hazard.
- Keep workplace storage areas free from accumulation of materials that could create hazards from tripping, fire, or explosion.
- Secure stored items such as bundles, containers, and bags to prevent them from falling, sliding, or collapsing by doing one or more of the following:
- Stacking.
- Racking.
- Blocking.
- Interlocking.
- Otherwise securing them.
- Make sure stored items are limited in height so that they are stable and secure to prevent sliding or collapse.
The state has its own version of OSHA’s General Duty Clause at WAC 296-800-11005 that requires employers to provide employees with a workplace free from recognized hazards that are causing, or are likely to cause, serious injury or death.
