The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA) has adopted most federal OSHA standards and has some additional unique requirements for conveyors.
Oregon includes safety rules for conveyors in the state’s material handling regulations. OAR 437-002-0221(14)-(20) lists the specific requirements, which include rules regarding:
- Controls of conveyors;
- Backstops;
- Loading, transfer, and discharge points;
- Guarding; and
- Portable conveyors.
Conveyors must meet the requirements for design, construction, inspection, testing, maintenance, and operation as specified in ANSI/ASME B20.1-1957, Safety Code for Conveyors, Cableways, and Related Equipment.
Workers are prohibited from riding on any conveyor if it is not intended for that purpose.
Oregon has unique standards for conveyors used in specialized industries — pulp, paper, and paperboard mills and for sawmills. Those standards are linked below.
