State Info
Michigan has adopted many federal OSHA standards and incorporates them by reference. The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) plan also has additional standards for conveyors.
The MIOSHA Standard GI Part 14, Conveyors, applies to the construction, maintenance, and operation of conveyors and conveying machinery in general industry. It does not apply to industrial trucks, underground mining conveyors, passenger conveyors, stacker cranes, driverless electronic tugs or construction equipment. Some requirements include:
- Employers must provide training to employees who work on or near conveyors to ensure hazards are understood.
- Employers must establish inspection programs to maintain conveyors such that they do not present a hazard to employees. Maintenance, repairs, and clean up on and near conveyors must be performed according to the standard and must take place when power is off and locked out.
- Employers must ensure that walkways or catwalks along conveyors are kept free of spills or other obstructions that could cause a slip or trip hazard.
- Employees must not ride, cross, or walk on conveyors unless the conveyor is designed for that purpose.
There are also standards related to:
- Conveyor design (Section R. 408.11421 through 408.11429), including guarding, counterweights, take-up, crossovers, rollbacks and runaways, and more.
- Requirements for specific types of conveyors (auger and screw, belt, bucket, pneumatic, roller, etc.) in Section R. 408.11441 through R. 408.11461.
The conveyors standard references these additional MIOSH standards:
- "Walking-Working Surfaces," R 408.10201 through R 408.10241.
- "Guards for Power Transmission," R 408.10701 through R 408.10765.
Michigan also has adopted safety standards for conveyors in specific industries. The standards may be found at:
