Alabama law defines “employee,” but the state generally follows the IRS definitions to define an independent contractor.
Employee: An individual in the employ of another who performs a service for hire and receives wages.
Independent contractor: Generally, individuals who follow an independent trade, business, or profession in which they offer services to the public.
