ClassDescription
Class A (CDL)Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided with the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle or vehicles being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Class B (CDL)A single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR of not more than 10,000 pounds.
Class C (CDL)A single vehicle with less than 26,001 pounds GVWR or GCWR, and the vehicle being towed does not have a GVWR over 10,000 pounds, or is designed to carry 16 or more people (including the driver), or carries hazardous materials in amounts requiring placarding.
ChauffeurA chauffeur’s license is needed if the driver:
  • Is employed for the principal purpose of operating a motor vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or more;
  • Operates a motor vehicle as a carrier of passengers or as a common or contract carrier of property; or
  • Operates a bus, school bus, pupil transportation vehicle, taxi or limousine.
