ClassDescription
Class AAny combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.  
Class BAny single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.
Class C (commercial)Any single vehicle with a GVWR less than 26,001 pounds or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds. This classification applies to:
  • Vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver; and
  • Vehicles used in the transportation of hazardous materials which require the vehicles to be placarded.
Class C (non-commercial)Any single vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 26,000 pounds, any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds, any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR in excess of 10,000 pounds, provided that the combination of vehicles has a gross combined vehicle weight rating not in excess of 26,000 pounds, and any self-propelled or towed vehicle that is equipped to serve as temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, or travel purposes and is used solely as a family or personal conveyance.
Class DProvisional license applicable to non-commercial Class C vehicles.
Class EAny combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. Applies to agricultural, military, and firefighter/emergency vehicles.
Class FA single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds. Applies to agricultural, military, and firefighting/emergency vehicles.
