ClassDescription
Class A (CDL)Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle or vehicles being towed is 10,001 pounds or greater.
Class B (CDL)Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more and any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR less than 10,001 pounds.
Class C (CDL)Any single vehicle or combination vehicle not included within Class A or B above, which is:
  • Designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver; or
  • Used in the transportation of hazardous materials that require the vehicle to be placarded under 49 C.F.R., Part 172, Subpart F.
Class A (classified)Required to operate any combination of vehicles that is exempt from CDL requirements with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle or vehicles being towed is 10,001 pounds or greater.
Class B (classified)Required to operate any single vehicle that is exempt from CDL requirements with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, and any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Class C (classified)Necessary to drive any vehicle or combination of vehicles which are exempt from commercial or classified Class A or B licenses. This includes vehicles which carry up to 15 passengers including the driver, and are not hauling hazardous materials.
