This standard provides guidance for establishing cylinder inspection procedures and standards to meet cylinder inspection requirements of the Department of Transportation. It covers all types of steel compressed gas cylinders including those that may be visually inspected in lieu of hydrostatic retest.
The standard includes information on the following:
- Inspection equipment,
- Inspections of low pressure cylinders exempt from the hydrostatic test,
- Inspections of low pressure cylinders subject to hydrostatic testing, and
- Inspections of high pressure cylinders.

29 CFR 1910.101(a) | Each employer shall determine that compressed gas cylinders under his control are in a safe condition to the extent that this can be determined by visual inspection. Visual and other inspections shall be conducted as prescribed in the Hazardous Materials Regulations of the Department of Transportation (49 CFR Parts 171–179 and 14 CFR Part 103).
