No. A driver who rides in a motorcoach and later takes over driving responsibilities on the motorcoach, without an eight-hour break in between, must record the riding time as “on duty/not driving.” According to 395.1(j)(2), the riding time may only be recorded as off duty if the driver:

  • Rides on the motorcoach but does no driving and has no other responsibility to the motor carrier, and
  • Takes at least eight consecutive hours off duty upon reaching a destination.
