Chapter 0800-01-10 Sharps injury prevention
Federal: 29 CFR 1910.1030 and Appendix A
A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:
- Document in your exposure control plan the engineered devices that you evaluated and currently use for sharps injury protection.
- Document information in your exposure control plan within six days of an exposure incident, to indicate the type and brand of device used during the incident.
- Evaluate and use available engineered devices for sharps injury protection if they are more effective than current devices. However, 0800-01-10-.05 explains that an engineered device for sharps injury protection is not required when the control measure would jeopardize patient safety or healthcare procedure success or when the control is not more effective than the alternative measure. In these exceptions, a record of the determination must be made.
- Note that the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the Tennessee Department of Health keep a list of needleless systems and sharps engineered to prevent sharps injury. This list is available to employers upon request. See 0800-01-10-.06.
