A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:
- The exposure determination mandate requires the employer to put all employees into one of two different categories — category A or B. Category A occupations are those that involve exposure or reasonably anticipated exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Category B occupations do not.
- Employers must keep a list of all category A job classifications.
- For category A employees, employers must ensure a copy of the exposure control plan is accessible, a hepatitis B vaccination is made available, an opportunity for post-exposure evaluation and follow-up is made after a reported exposure incident, medical and training records are maintained, and required bloodborne pathogens training is provided.
- The exposure control plan must include training program information and task-specific, standard operating procedures. Only qualified people are authorized to write and review the exposure control plan.
- Before an evaluation, procedure, vaccination, or post-exposure prophylaxis, employers must ensure the employee receives counseling about medical risks and benefits.
