ASME B30.5 Mobile and locomotive cranes (ANSI B30.5)

This standard covers crawler cranes, locomotive cranes, and wheel-mounted cranes of both truck and self-propelled wheel type. The standard covers this equipment where used as lifting cranes. Among other things, it requires that a load rating chart be attached to crane cab, and that a monthly written inspection be kept for critical items.

29 CFR 1910.180(b)(2)Employers must ensure all new crawler, locomotive, and truck cranes constructed and utilized on or after August 31, 1971, meet the design specifications of the American National Standard Safety Code for Crawler, Locomotive, and Truck Cranes, ANSI B30.5-1968. Crawler, locomotive, and truck cranes constructed prior to August 31, 1971, should be modified to conform to those design specifications by February 15, 1972, unless it can be shown that the crane cannot feasibly or economically be altered and that the crane substantially complies with the requirements of 1910.180.ANSI B30.5-1968 Safety Code for Crawler, Locomotive, and Truck Cranes.1
29 CFR 1926.1414(b)(1)Employers must ensure wire rope (other than rotation resistant rope) complies with either section 5-1.7.1 of ASME B30.5-2004 (except that section’s paragraph (c) must not apply) or that the wire rope is designed to have, in relation to the equipment’s rated capacity, a sufficient minimum breaking force and design factor so that compliance with the applicable inspection provisions in §1926.1413 will be an effective means of preventing sudden rope failure.  ASME B30.5-2004 Mobile and Locomotive Cranes.
29 CFR 1926.1414(e)(4)(ii)(C)Rotation resistant ropes for boom hoist reeving must meet the requirements in ASME B30.5-2004 sections 5-1.3.2(a), (a)(2) through (a)(4), (b) and (d) except that the minimum pitch diameter for sheaves used in multiple rope reeving is 18 times the nominal diameter of the rope used (instead of the value of 16 specified in section 5-1.3.2(d)).ASME B30.5-2004 Mobile and Locomotive Cranes.
29 CFR 1926.1433(a)Employers must ensure crawler, truck and locomotive cranes manufactured prior to November 8, 2010   meet the applicable requirements for design, construction, and testing as prescribed in ANSI B30.5-1968, PCSA Std. No. 2 (1968), the requirements in 1926.1423(b), or the applicable DIN standards that were in effect at the time of manufacture.ANSI B30.5-1968 Safety Code for Crawler, Locomotive, and Truck Cranes.1
29 CFR 1926.1433(b)Employers must ensure mobile (including crawler and truck) and locomotive cranes manufactured on or after November 8, 2010 meet the following portions of ASME B30.5-2004 as applicable: (1) In section 5-1.1.1 (“Load Ratings- Where Stability Governs Lifting Performance”), paragraphs (a)-(d) (including subparagraphs). (2) In section 5-1.1.2 (“Load Ratings- Where Structural Competence Governs Lifting Performance”), paragraph (b). (3) Section 5-1.2 (“Stability (Backward and Forward)”). (4) In section 5-1.3.1 (“Boom Hoist Mechanism”), paragraphs (a), (b)(1) and (b)(2), except that when using rotation resistant rope, §1926.1414(c)(4)(ii)(A) applies. (5) In section 5-1.3.2 (“Load Hoist Mechanism”), paragraphs (a)(2) through (a)(4) (including subparagraphs), (b) (including subparagraphs), (c) (first sentence only) and (d).
