Summary of differences between federal and state regulations
There is no one federal law that specifically addresses employment applications, although there are record retention guidelines under a variety of federal laws (see the Recordkeeping topic) and non-discrimination provisions for hiring in general (see the Discrimination topic).
Tennessee law provides that it is a discriminatory practice for an employer to limit, segregate or classify an employee or job applicant in any way which would tend to deprive the individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect their status because of race, creed, color, religion, sex, age or national origin.
