This publication covers ventilation and operation of open surface tanks. The standard aims to protect operators from contact with hazards, such as gases, vapors, and mists, caused by open surface tank operations. The standard covers the design of ventilation systems to control these hazards.

29 CFR 1910.124(b)(4)(iv) Employers must ensure that when mechanical ventilation is used, it conforms to the following standard: ANSI Z9.1-1971, Practices for Ventilation and Operation of Open-Surface Tanks, and NFPA 34-1966, Standard for Dip Tanks Containing Flammable or Combustible Liquids. 29 CFR 1910.261(g)(18)(v) Employers must ensure that smelt tanks are provided with vent stacks and explosion doors, in accordance with American National Standard Z9.1-1951.   ANSI Z9.1-1951 Safety Code for Ventilation and Operation of Open Surface Tanks.
29 CFR 1910.261(h)(2)(i) Employers must ensure that the room in which the bleach powder is mixed is provided with adequate exhaust ventilation, located at the floor level, in accordance with American National Standard Z9.1-1951. ANSI Z9.1-1951 Safety Code for Ventilation and Operation of Open Surface Tanks.
