This standard covers the construction, care, and use of common types of portable metal ladders. Among other things, it requires that ladders not be longer than 20 feet, climbers must face the ladder, and ladders be stored on proper racks to prevent sagging. The earlier ANSI A14.1 and A14.2 standards only rate and have test procedures for 300 pound rated ladders. A newer ANSI portable ladder standard for 375 pound rated ladders is out, but it is not incorporated into OSHA standards.
