This standard covers three basic types of sound level meters: Types 1, 2, and 3 with Type 3 having the most stringent performance requirements. Among other things, the standard requires that sound level meters be designed to minimize vibration effects from airborne noise, and that modifications to sound level meters be demonstrated to meet the standard’s requirements and specifications. OSHA references ANSI S1.4 in its 1910.95 standard on occupational noise exposure.

Incorporation by reference
The following editions have been incorporated by reference (IBR) into the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR):
IBR approved for | Overview of requirements | IBR approved edition |
---|---|---|
29 CFR 1910.95 Appendix D | Rooms used for audiometric testing must not have background sound pressure levels exceeding those in Table D-1 when measured by equipment conforming at least to the Type 2 requirements of American National Standard Specification for Sound Level Meters, S1.4-1971 (R1976), and to the Class II requirements of American National Standard Specification for Octave, Half-Octave, and Third-Octave Band Filter Sets, S1.11-1971 (R1976). | ANSI S1.4-71 (R 76) Specification for Sound Level Meters. |
29 CFR 1910.95 Appendix I | Sound level —Ten times the common logarithm of the ratio of the square of the measured A-weighted sound pressure to the square of the standard reference pressure of 20 micropascals. Unit: decibels (dB). For use with 1910.95, SLOW time response, in accordance with ANSI S1 .4-1971 (R1976). | ANSI S1.4-71 (R 76) Specification for Sound Level Meters. |
