Each state manages universal waste differently. Hazardous waste is regulated from cradle to grave. Most states run their own solid and hazardous waste programs. These programs may be more stringent than the federal program.
There are three categories of hazardous waste generators (States may have different categories.):
- Very small quantity generators (VSQGs). VSQGs generate less than 100 kg of hazardous waste or less than 1 kg of acute hazardous waste per month.
- Small quantity generators (SQGs). SQGs generate 100 kg or more, but less than 1000 kg of hazardous waste per month and no more than 1 kg of acute hazardous waste per month.
- Large quantity generators (LQGs). LQGs generate 1000 kg or more per month of hazardous waste or more than 1 kg of acute hazardous waste per month.
