The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) headquarters sends warning letters to motor carriers. A warning letter notifies a motor carrier that its safety performance data shows that the carrier is not fully complying with all
applicable FMCSA safety regulations. The warning letter lists the Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories where the carrier’s performance indicates safety issues and encourages the carrier to look at its Safety Measurement System data online. The warning letter does not require the motor carrier to respond to FMCSA.
Motor carriers who receive warning letters should review their safety data and develop and execute strategies that will make their operation compliant with the safety regulations. Continued poor performance will lead to more intensive
interventions.
