The following commercial vehicles must stop at railroad crossings.
- Any bus transporting passengers.
- Any vehicle transporting hazardous materials that is required to be marked or placarded, except Divisions 1.5, 1.6, 4.2, 6.2, and Class 9.
- Any cargo tank motor vehicle, loaded or empty, used to transport hazardous material.
- Any cargo tank motor vehicle transporting a material which at the time of loading had a temperature above its flashpoint.
- Any cargo tank, loaded or empty, transporting a material under a hazardous materials exemption.
- Any vehicle carrying any amount of chlorine gas.
Where to stop?
Stops must be made within 50 feet of the crossing, but no closer than 15 feet.
Is it safe to cross?
- Listen and look in both directions for approaching trains.
- When you determine that it is safe to cross the tracks, you may do so.
- Do not shift gears while crossing the tracks.
