OSHA doesn’t explicitly say what the qualifications are for an overhead crane inspector. However, knowing the definition of the term “designated” person may be helpful. Under 29 CFR 1910.179(a), OSHA defines the term designated as “selected or assigned by the employer or the employer's representative as being qualified to perform specific duties.” The employer may wish to also check the latest edition of ANSI B30.2, Overhead and Gantry Cranes, for recommendations on who should or must conduct overhead crane inspections.
