“Smaller” lithium cells and batteries qualify for certain exceptions from regulatory requirements when packed in certain quantities. For the purposes of DOT regulations, a “smaller” cell or battery is as follows:
- Lithium Ion:
- Cells equal to or less than 20Wh, and Batteries equal to or less than 100Wh
- For highway and rail ONLY: Cells not exceeding 60Wh, and Batteries not exceeding 300Wh
- Lithium Metal:
- Cells equal to or less than 1g, and Batteries equal to or less than 2g
- For highway and rail ONLY: Cells not exceeding 5g, and Batteries not exceeding 25g Note: For a single cell battery, such as a typical coin cell or standard AA or AAA replacement battery, refer to the size for cells.
