A commercial motor vehicle must be equipped with acceptable warning devices. Under federal regulations, this means either three bi-directional emergency reflective triangles, six solid-fuel flares (fusees), or three liquid–burning flares. See: §392.22 and 393.95.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has also approved use of a specific brand of battery-powered LED lights that may be used in place of the devices listed above.
Reflective triangles must meet the specifications of vehicle standard 571.125. Fusees and liquid-burning flares must meet Underwriters Laboratories standards. Flame-producing devices are prohibited on vehicles carrying explosives, flammable gases, or flammable liquids, or on any motor vehicle using compressed gas as a motor fuel.
