Traumatic incident stress is a condition resulting from experiencing a catastrophic event or prolonged exposure to a shocking or frightening experience. Emergency response and disaster cleanup workers may be affected emotionally, mentally, and physically. They may experience reactive anxiety or depression and should be monitored to help reduce significant stress early. NIOSH offers a publication entitled, “Traumatic Incident Stress: Information for Emergency Response Workers,” DHHS (NIOSH) Publication Number 2002-107.
