The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that in 2022, utility-scale electricity generation facilities in the United States generated about 4.243 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This is the breakdown:
About 60 percent of this electricity generation was from fossil fuels (e.g., coal, natural gas, petroleum, and other gases);
About 21 percent was from renewable energy sources (e.g., solar, wind, hydropower, etc.); and
About 18 percent was from nuclear energy.
