The Poultry Products Inspection Act (PPIA) is federal legislation that requires the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to inspect the slaughter and processing of domesticated birds and poultry products intended for human consumption, as applicable. Enacted in 1957, the PPIA is designed to prevent adulterated or misbranded poultry products from entering commerce and to ensure poultry products are produced under sanitary conditions.
