After credentials are presented and the officer is inside your facility, an opening conference is conducted during which he or she will explain how your company was selected for inspection. At this time, the officer will present you with a copy of the complaint made against your company, if applicable, as well as what the scope of the inspection will be, and the walk-around procedures.
The conference will include employees and/or employee representatives — who can be chosen by the union, safety committee, or the employees themselves. You can object, but then the officer will simply meet separately with those individuals. The authorized representative also has the right to go along on the walk-around inspection.
Also, remember that this is a legal proceeding so to speak. Be wary of getting too cozy or comfortable with the inspector. On the other hand, don’t appear to be resentful or difficult during the inspection, just be polite and formal.
