Environmental concerns surrounding poultry processing include solid organic waste and by-products, wastewater, air emissions, and energy consumption. Regulations include:

  • 40 CFR Part 432 that covers wastewater directly discharged by slaughterhouses, further processors, independent renderers, and poultry processors.
  • 9 CFR 416 requiring each official establishment to be operated and maintained in a manner sufficient to prevent the creation of unsanitary conditions and to ensure that product is not adulterated.
