Subpart J of Part 383 lists the required information that state agencies must place on the commercial driver’s license document. Among those items are codes for the CDL classes and specific endorsements in which the driver is qualified, as well as restrictions on the types of vehicles that can be operated.
Groups of commercial motor vehicles:
A for Combination Vehicle
B for Heavy Straight Vehicle
C for Small Vehicle
Endorsements:
T for double/triple
P for passenger
N for tank vehicle
H for hazardous materials
X for a combination of tank vehicle and hazardous materials
S for school bus
Any state-specific codes for additional grouping of endorsements issued at the discretion of the state must be fully explained on the front or back of the CDL document.
