The retroreflective sheeting, as required for new trailers and semitrailers, must conform to a specific pattern of red and white colors. This pattern must consist of:
- Alternating red and white segments that are at least 2 inches (50 mm) wide applied to the sides of a trailer so that not less than 50 percent of its length is covered, with the spaces between the sheeting being as equal as possible;
- Alternating red and white segments that are at least 2 inches (50 mm) wide applied to the rear of the trailer in a continuous strip and as close to the edges as possible;
- A single strip of red and white sheeting on the rear underride bar; and
- Two pairs of 12-inch (300 mm) white strips applied horizontally and vertically to the upper right and left corners of the rear of the trailer.
See Standard No. 571.108, S8.2, for detailed specifications.
