What are safety audits?

These audits are used for those identified as new carriers, registering for USDOT identification numbers. They are used to educate and offer technical assistance in assessing the carrier’s safety performance and management controls. The audit is meant as an educational tool and not as an opportunity to penalize a new carrier.

The intent is to audit a new carrier after the first three months of starting operations. This 90-day time frame was selected by the FMCSA to give new entrants enough time to establish sufficient safety records to review.
