Incompatible wastes refer to two or more wastes that will have a negative reaction if they come into contact with each other. The negative reaction may produce effects that are harmful to human health and the environment, such as:
- Fire or explosions;
- Violent reactions;
- Uncontrolled toxic mists, fumes, dusts, or gases;
- Uncontrolled flammable fumes or gases; or
- Damage to the structural integrity of a device or the facility.
Appendix V to 40 CFR Part 264/265 contains examples of potentially incompatible waste. However, the list isn’t exhaustive. Hazardous waste generators and owners/operators of hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities are responsible for adequately analyzing wastes to avoid creating uncontrolled substances or reactions from incompatible wastes.
