In the State of South Dakota drivers of any towed vehicle, motor truck, truck tractor, or trailer (commercial or non-commercial) which weighs in excess of 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight must stop and report at weigh scale locations.
The only type vehicle not required to stop is a recreational vehicle.
Portable scales are also used to check compliance with the legal weight limits.
