State Info
In Wisconsin, concealed carry of a firearm is legal for adults aged 21 and older who are allowed under state and federal law to possess a firearm and who have a state Concealed Carry Weapons License (CCWL) or a valid permit from a reciprocity state. This extends to concealed carry in a private vehicle. Without a proper license, a loaded handgun may not be carried in a vehicle while concealed in any manner.
Permits
Wisconsin CCWLs are issued by the state Department of Justice. Licenses may be issued to qualified residents 21 years and older as well as military personnel stationed in the state. A firearms safety training course is required. Wisconsin has broad reciprocity with a majority of other states.
Other weapons
In Wisconsin, the definition of “weapon” includes handguns, electric weapons (stun guns/tasers), and billy clubs. Machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and long guns may not be carried concealed.
Permitted non-lethal weapons include:
- Pepper spray
- Tear gas
- Bear spray (legal for self-defense against wildlife)
- Bludgeons/batons
- Less-lethal launchers
Duty to inform
There is no duty to inform in Wisconsin unless asked by a member of law enforcement.
Employee parking lots
Employers may not prohibit holders of valid CCWLs from carrying or storing concealed weapons in the license holder’s private vehicle.
